Why do my cakes dome and how to prevent it?

Cakes get a dome shape due to the cake pan heating up faster than the cake itself. This causes the edges to set before the middle is done baking, giving the middle more time to rise. This is why the outside edges will golden first.

To fix this, you need to cool and insulate the outside of the pan. To do this you can purchase Cake Strips, or you can make your own. The only things you need are paper towels and aluminum foil!

DIY Cake Strips

1. First you will measure out a paper towel the length to fit around your cake pan.

2. Fold the paper towel lengthwise to be about 2 inches in width.

3. Cut a length of foil that is about 2 inches longer than the paper towel.

4. Put the paper towel in a bowl of water and wring out the excess water. The towel should be damp but not dripping.

5. Place the wet paper towel on the aluminum foil and wrap around the towel. This will hold in the moisture.

6. Wrap the foil around your pan. Push down the foil edges so that it stays in place. Fold any excess tightly so that it stays in place.
